You can type in VATSIM but for added realisim but anyone will reccomend you use a headset. Like you say it adds realism and makes you feel like a real pilot. I reccomend a USB headset from Argos for around the £20 mark. It is reliable and the sound quality is brilliant.
There are cheaper ones from Currys, Currys.Digital etc but are not as good.
