FSX:the good and the bad revisited, returning to FS9

Choise number 1 does not permit access to any services, among them the Internet.
It also will disable all anti-virus programs as well as MS built in firewall.

If you do go on the net for flying you certainly should not disable your firewall unless you do have a hardware one like what is built into a lot of routers and combined ADSL modem/routers.

There used to be programs on AVSIM that can disable unwanted "services" and the enable them again after the FS9 session. I do not remember the names but do a search there.

This is not to say you should not use "selective start" - a lot of autostarts/services are more or less unneccessary for the home user, but you do have to be careful when deselecting them.

Windows Paging file = the "swap" file.

I believe you will not gain anything by deleting the swapfile on C: but you will get other problems if your installed RAM is not sufficient for running FS9 on its own. That is to say with small RAM 2 GB and below you will need the swapfile.

However the swapfile should be set to a reasonable size say 3 Gb (= set 3069 in the 2 fields).  The swapfile on other partitions like D: E: and so on can be disabled.

One extra thing - disable the WIN Indexing Service for all drives !
Right Click the drive in "My Computer" and select Properties.
The indexing service disable field will be in the bottom of Common Properties.
I cannot see any use whatsoever with this real resorce eater.

One and the best (I think) is called FS Autostart, fsasv1111.zip.

At last I did not revert to FS2004 (but almost stoped flying FS....    ) I read the coments on my post. Sorry chaps, it is not about framerates. I get just (only just) good framerates playing things at 75% of the settings (p4 D950  Dual @ 3,4ghz (set various background progs to core 1 and fsx to core 0 ) 1,5 gig of ram, ATI x1900xt /512mb RAID 10 setup) My post is about the look and feel of FSX. And what I am very sad about is that after all that look and feel was a lesser step forward then I hoped it would be. But let's look at how good FSX is through another perspective. As FS2004 came out, in less then 3 month ther where loads of new freeware files for it. Nowadays they (fs9) count in the tens of thousands! Yet ther are only a few new FSX files each week. What I'm looking for just isn't there: a nice twin engined turboprop like a Dash8, Fokker f50 or even the YS. What is there just doesn't work properly (like I said, there's no real backward compatibility) My old FS2004 scenery (4gig!) doesn't fit the new landscape, which is very sad because I enjoyed flying to LIMC (Milan) in the ISD scenery. (man- that is super nice made!) There are loads and loads of scenery packs of Chile for FSX comming out. Just the place I don't want to fly to (ok I'm hard to please    )  And then there's the announcement of a big patch to come....  I'm still afraid the FS designers got it all wrong. Despite of what they say about FSX beeing made for many years to come. That is nonsens. That is from a sales perspective the greatest joke I ever heard (to say it very very politely)    Ok guys let's wait a couple of years.

FSX many month later. I've stopped playing FS for about 3/4 year and then got a ATR72 as a present at the very moment this plane was ready to fly in FSX. (flight one ATR72-500) This came as a turning point in my "relationship"with FSX. To patches from the FSX team did the rest. FSX is flyable, shockwave3d redux lights make things enjoyable at night, the landscape could have been done better, but having installed freeware 3rd party textures and having different sets of mountain textures to remove the dessert textures (in Europe.. pfffuh) in the mountains things became better. Still the landscape overal is to bright, shadows in the mountains aren't deep enough and mountains in the distance should be blueish. But OK it will do until the next FS and I'm awaiting prices to drop on several quadcore and rapid processors.
