This image shows the airport. (Linked from the Finnish discussion) MSA to the mountains is something around 17000 feet, so I can imagine that this airport is not very easy place to land. Also in the A.net forums some captain told that in the approach plates there were warnings of turbulence on final.

They approached from the sea, anyway, hence they crashed into the sea.

"Age" is easy to blame and rather subjective... there are still 727's or Tristars flying out there
